Dancing with the Midwives A Memoir of Art and Grief, takes you through an intimate experience of grief that leaves you with a sense of the profound changes inherent in that process. It is a personal story that carries a universal message That grief is difficult and challenging, but ultimately good.
The book is both art piece and memoir, in which Faison embraces the grieving process after her child dies in utero. She delivers careful observations in short, spare prose, vivid poems and fine pencil drawings. A deformed ladybug, a new haircut, and the trauma of still birth are all described intricately, from a place of being present to the moment. Her simple drawings of seed pods, twigs, feathers and other tiny wonders carry the persistence of renewal, the undercurrent of all healing, throughout the pages. Dancing with the Midwives is a celebration of the beauty that is inherent, but often missed, in the grieving process.

If you have recently lost a child I would suggest reading this at some point but do wait till you are in a place that is well supportive and emotionally stable. My son has been gone for 7 years when I read this book but I had to set it down a few time and come back a few days later to give myself a little time.Product details

Dancing with the Midwives edition by Ann Faison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Hardly a conventional memoir or treatise on grief, this book provides almost a literal human imprint of what is left behind by the concussive break that absence brings. There is confusion, doubt, resolve, love, and personal actualization all wrapped up in something that moves between memoir, journal, and art work. Subtle, honest, and transcendant.
this is a really beautiful book. i had to put it down several times, it was so moving. and then i read it two more times without stopping.
the drawings are wonderful. the pace and rhythm of the writing is so perfect. an amazing book!
What a beautiful book. I was captivated by the brave and vulnerable writing and finished in one sitting. The chapter for which the book is named is incredible.
I finished your book Ann and found it difficult to put down. Started reading in bed about 10PM and ended up going to sleep quite late that night, so I could finish reading it. What a moving and uplifting account of how you dealt with this period in your life. I so admire how you and your family have been able to heal, (and I'm sure it's an on-going process) in such a graceful, positive way. Thanks for a great read. Beautiful art work too. Now David has asked to read it. Thanks Ann.
I read this book for a class and will now order the paper copy for others to share. Must read when studying grief or pregnancy loss. Grief is dealt with differently for us all. This is definitely an artistic approach to the journey through healing.
Reading this felt like looking in an occasional mirror, occasional window. I sat in the quiet after reading each passage and had to decipher my thoughts. Did I agree? Was I allowed to disagree? How did she know that about me? It was all so beautiful.
Ann Faison has a gift. She chooses the right words to frame a tragic loss and how she and her family cope with their feelings. I wish some of the sections were longer but I enjoyed and empathized with her. Life throws curves and it it is up to each one of us to either learn or to give up. Ann grows in wisdom and writes with compassion towards herself. She is a gifted writer and artist and i hope to see more books from her pen.
